Malet Lambert School Zero Discharge Pitch
 Hull

The Scheme

As part of the refurbishment and extension to Malet Lambert School in Hull, a new outdoor multi-use sports pitch was designed and installed with a zero-discharge policy situated on a high water table.

The Solution

The design comprised of a single layer raft of Permavoid 85mm units, which is a replacement for the traditional pitch subbase, and enables substantial quantities of water to be attenuated within the pitch construction. When surrounded by an impermeable membrane, the Permavoid layer can retain up to 80mm of water across the entire area, reducing the need for large deep rainwater attenuation tanks.

The installed drainage system was only a shallow excavation, preventing any construction problems with the high water table. The new drainage system accelerated surface water drainage which improved the existing drainage, meaning this system was more superior than a zero-discharge pitch.

A wet pour permeable shockpad was installed on top of the Permavoid layer, which protected the Permavoid units from point loading whilst also providing a degree of comfort to the user, cushioning the impact on joints/muscles and prolonging the life of the synthetic turf carpet.

The pitch construction was finished with Soccer Turf 60M synthetic turf, which had line markings for football and mini soccer permanently inlaid into the carpet.
